In the Shadow of Apollo 11 11 Women Engineers
In the Shadow of Apollo 11 11 Women Engineers In the Shadow of Apollo 11 11 Women Engineers In the Shadow of Apollo 11 11 Women EngineersPhotographs of the Apollo 11 launch portray the United States space program of the 1960s as a white mans world. NASA statistics confirm this In 1959, the new space agency employed six women who were classified as scientists. By the Apollo era, women made up only 3 to 5 percent of the professional work force agency-wide. (The percentage of African American professionals was even smaller, between 1.5 and 3 percent.) In the popular imagination, these women were virtually invisible. NASAs women scientists and engineers gathered in a meeting room in 1959. Photo NASAOver the past decade, however, some of those pioneering women and their invaluable contributions have finally been recognized. Margaret Hamilton, who developed the on-board flight software for Apollos on-board computer, is now widely hailed as the first software engineer. Kather ine Johnson, Mary Jackson, Dorothy Vaughan, and other black female mathematicians who calculated flight trajectories as so-called human computers have been featured in a book and movie.Hundreds other women who were not considered engineers provided critical support. These include workers known as little old ladies who threaded copper wires through magnetic rings, creating core rope memory for Apollo computers seamstresses for an undergarment company who created the safe and flexible spacesuits and NASA secretaries, assistants, and typists. Here is a gallery of some of the unsung women engineersand a brief synopsis of their contribution to the Moon landing. Bobbie Johnson was breaking glass ceilings since girlhood. Photo Society of Women Engineers1. Barbara Bobbie Crawford Johnson In high school Bobbie Johnson started flying airplanes. By 1946, she became the first woman to graduate with an engineering diploma from the University of Illinois and began working at North A merican Aviation. At NASA, Johnson worked around the clock on the Apollos trajectories and aero-heating environments. On Johnsons recommendation, NASA began using elliptical, rather than circular, orbits during space flights to ensure astronauts could return in case of a propulsion failure. I think the lunar landing was the coup de grace for meits just the fact that we could go to a strange body and come back alive, Johnson said in a Society of Women Engineers (SWE) oral history interview in 2003. It didnt matter what we brought backrocks were fine. You wouldnt dream you could do that, and we did it. Margaret Brennecke was the first female welding engineer at NASAs Marshall Space Flight Center. Photo NASA2. Margaret W. Hap BrenneckeDaughter of a music teacher, Margaret, or Hap, Brennecke was inspired by President John F. Kennedys 1961 speech. She had been working at Alcoa on how to weld large structures for boats, aircraft, and bridges, so she applied for a job at NA SAs Marshall Space Flight Center. She was hiredas the first female welding engineer to work at Marshalls Materials and Processes Laboratory. Brenneckes work at Marshall focused on developing stronger and lighter aluminum alloys to withstand hostile space environment. She also invented new welding processes to join giant pieces of Saturn V fuel tanks. Brennecke faced discrimination throughout her career and used only initials instead of her full name in numerous academic papers in professional journals, for fear of not being accepted for publication. You learn to go around or up or down of the roadblocks, she said in a 2004 NASA interview.3. Arminta Harness Life-long groupie of Amelia Earhart and a pilot herself, Arminta Harness graduated from the University of Southern California with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Aeronautical Engineering in 1955, and became the first woman engineer to join the United States Air Force. A few years later, Lt. Col. Harness was assigned to Gemini Program and witnessed launches of several Gemini and Apollo missions at Cape Canaveral in Florida. Her desk at Los Angeles Air Force Base was next to Buzz Aldrins, who was also an Air Force officer. I remember an Apollo landing where we almost lost the crew before we got them out, and Buzz Aldrin had been my desk mate earlier, Harness said in a 2003 SWE interview. It was a very personal thing. There were high points and there were low points. They were exciting. It was wonderful to be a part of it. Phyllis Gaylard konzepted space vehicles and rocket engine structures at TRW. Photo Society of Women Engineers4. Phyllis GaylardPhyllis Gaylard graduated from UCLA in 1959 with a B.S. in engineering. She first worked as a structural engineer, and then at TRW designed space vehicles and rocket engine structures and researched ways of predicting fatigue failures in solar arrays. Gaylard contributed to the development of the lunar module descent engine for the Apollo program. The moon lander had to withstand landing on a flat-topped, twenty-four inch high rock without tipping over. So we had to have the nozzle extension that comes down off the bottom of the spacecraft collapse if it happened to hit something like that, Gaylard told a SWE interviewer in 2007. Which is notyou know, you normally dont design things to fail. To withstand all the loads you need to up to a certain point and then crumble. Well, no loose parts, just squish. And we succeeded in that. Ivy Hooks went on to be one of the original space shuttle design team members. Photo NASA/JSC5. Ivy HooksWith a masters in mathematics and physics, Ivy Hooks began working at NASA in 1965 as an aerospace technologist. Her first job was to model the lighting on the Moon to build accurate simulators for training astronauts. She worked on Apollos launch escape system and the parachutes to make sure they behaved as expected in case of an aborted launch. Hooks also contributed to the deflec tor that protected the underside of the Lunar Module during landing. When the first spacecraft landed on the Moon, I tried to figure out, what do I feel right now? Hooks said in a 2003 interview with the SWE. Ive worked on some of these pieces and parts of this, I helped put somebody there.Editors Pick Engineers Remember the Making of the Lunar Module Dottie dem wind abgewandte seites work on Apollo heat shield lives on in the Orion spacecraft. She read astrophysics books as a child and dedicated herself to helping humanity get to the Moon. Fresh from college with a degree in mathematics, Lee was hired as a human computer to work at NASA Langley Research Center. By chance, the legendary designer Maxime Faget, then head of the Pilotless Aircraft Research teilen, noticed Lee and moved her to engineering. Later, Lee transferred to Johnson Space Center, where she was one of only a handful of women engineers. Lee worked on predicting the performance of the Command Module heat shield, looking at temperatures and pressures the capsule would have to endure on re-entry. Her calculations were essential in the design of that spacecraftand many others. On the day of the Moon landing, she didnt get to celebrate with the other engineers. I was just going to go home, Lee said in 1999 NASA interview. I had to relieve the babysitter.7. Georgianna Yvonne Young Y.Y. Clark In 1951, Y.Y. Clark was the first woman to graduate with a degree in mechanical engineering from Howard University, but as the only woman graduate, she had to receive her diploma in a private ceremony. Working as an aerospace engineer at NASAs Marshall Space Center, Clark investigated Saturn V hot spots, found their cause, and corrected the underlying problem of heat escaping from ignition. Later, she helped design the Apollo Lunar Sample Return Container, the box in which Neil Armstrong bro ught samples back to Earth. Fighting through both gender and racial discrimination, this ASME Life Member dedicated over 50 years to mentoring and teaching students at Tennesbinnensee State University. Now, you might call me a pioneer, but I dont see myself as one, Clark said in a 2001 SWE interview. I am tired of being the first person doing something. Wheres the rest of these people? Mary Winston Jackson became NASAs first black female engineer in 1958. Photo NASA8. Mary Winston JacksonMary Jackson, whose contribution to space exploration as a human computer was chronicled in the 2016 film Hidden Figures, became NASAs first black female engineer in 1958. To earn her engineering degree, Jackson needed to take graduate-level night classes at the University of Virginia, but those classes were taught at a segregated school in Hampton, Va. She had to petition the city for permission to attend those classes. Jacksons work as an aerospace engineer specialized in boundary l ayer effects on vehicles at supersonic speeds. Analyzing aerodynamic data from wind tunell experiments and real flight data, Jackson focused on understanding air flow, including thrust and drag forces.9. Naomi McAfeeAfter Naomi McAfee graduated from Western Kentucky University with a physics degree in 1956, she started at Westinghouse, eventually working her way up to become the companys first female supervisor engineer. McAfee worked on environmental measurements experiments, including the measurement of micrometeorite bombardment on objects in space that research informed the design of the Apollo spacecrafts hull. McAfee also worked on the television camera used on Apollo 11. Its hard to describe the anticipation and the anxiety that one felt hearing them land on the Moon, and then knowing that they were going to be coming out, and that when they did step onto the Moon, that that camera would take the pictures and transmit them back to the Earth, McAfee said in a 2003 SWE intervie w. And just waiting to see if it would work created quite a bit of stress.Recommended for You 5 Women Pioneers in Engineering10. Doris C. Chandler Armed with a degree in mathematics from Tulane University, Doris Chandler began working in guidance theory applications research and development in 1954. Chandler was one of the first women to assume a leadership role at NASA when she became an active deputy chief of the Astrodynamics and Guidance Theory Division in 1969. She was the key aerospace engineer behind Saturn V flight mechanics and guidance system. A few years later, when participating in a first all-women materials science experiments for Spacelab, Chandler told a newspaper that she hoped to fly in a space mission herself, together with her daughter who was planning to study engineering. There are plenty of qualified women available for scientific type missions, she said in 1974. There is no reason why women couldnt do almost any job a man could do in space in the future, incl uding pilot, technician, or even construction worker.11. Jeanne Lee Crews With a degree in aeronautical engineering, Jeanne Crews joined the flight crew support teilen at Johnson Space Center in 1964. Crews helped designed and tested flight simulators for astronauts, and studied Earth landmarks visible from orbit that astronauts could use for navigation if primary systems failed. She longed to be an astronaut, however, and her supervisors allowed her to operate the flight simulator as long as no one saw or photographed her. Crews also wasnt allowed to witness the historic Apollo 11 Moon landing with her male colleagues. Women were not allowed out on the floor in Mission Control, she said in a 2007 NASA interview. I was in the back rooms, and then if Id walk in the elevator, there would be comments, like, Well, its certainly good we keep women out of the Mission Control.Daria Merkusheva is a technology writer based in New York City. You May Also Like Sunita Williams Soars Weightlessly

Three Ways to Turn a Phone Interview Into a Job Interview
Three Ways to Turn a Phone Interview Into a Job Interview Three Ways to Turn a Phone Interview Into a Job Interview We all know that getting the phone interview is half the battle. Itâs a sign that you could be a good fit for the position, but that the company wants to screen prospective candidates in 15 or 30-minute increments. The phone interview is an opportunity to prove that youâre a good fit, but itâs no guarantee that youâll make it through to a more substantial interview unless youâre both a good fit for the job description and the companyâs culture. How can you prove to the interviewer that you deserve an in-person opportunity? Use the following four tips to pass the phone interview and get a full interview. Focus on the present opportunity Far too often getting a phone interview leads one to focus us on the main goal of getting a full interview. However, not being focused in the present for your brief phone interview can cause you to appear disorganized or unfocused. Donât flash forward to the job interview before you get it. As hard as it might be, focus on the phone interview rather than whether or not it might result in a full interview. Bring all your attention just to this phone interview and focus on explaining to the screening interviewer your fit for the position. Study vocal communication skills Phone interaction is different from in-person interaction. While in person you have your presence and your handshake, on the phone all youâve got is your resume and your voice. Use the following speaking tips to convey a personable and warm connection during your phone interview: Speak the interviewees name every few minutes to build rapport Vary the tone and quality of your voice (be careful to avoid upspeak if thatâs something you struggle with) Do vocal warm ups before the call to smooth out your voice Write a script of answers for different questions you typically struggle with, such as Tell me about yourself.â Remember to interview the interviewer, too One standby tip to relieve pressure and increase your confidence is to focus on the fact that you are interviewing the interviewer, too. The phone interview is the first of several low-pressure chances for you to evaluate whether this is a company you want to work with and a job that will satisfy your career goals. Brainstorm questions you can ask that will help you determine if the jobâs a good fit, thus making this interview a mutually beneficial conversation rather than a nerve-wracking interrogation. Follow up the same way you would for a regular interview Even without an onsite visit the interviewer has set aside time and energy to speak with you and get to know you. Follow up the same way you would for a regular interview by sending a note via email to thank the person for their time. Sometimes you wonât have access to the interviewerâs information due to an automated or electronic scheduling process, so finish the interview with a warm show of appreciation. Using the interviewers name, clearly say that you appreciate their taking the time to speak with you and (if this is true) that getting to know them has given you a very warm impression of the company overall. Every interaction you have with the company is a reflection on how you will behave as an employee. As more companies try to be efficient with their time or fill positions with candidates who arenât local, a phone screening interview is becoming a more natural part of the interview process. Donât dismiss it or try to skip ahead. Use it as an opportunity to show your character and indicate your fit for the position.

Excerpt from TAKE OFF YOUR SHOES From the Boardroom to Bali and Back
Excerpt from TAKE OFF YOUR SHOES From the Boardroom to Bali and Back Excerpt from TAKE OFF YOUR SHOES From the Boardroom to Bali and Back It sounds like the plot of a movie. Super successful CEO has a great job but is feeling burned out and never get to see his family and friends because of his career success. So he decides to drop everything and move to Bali. But this isnât a movie plot. This is what Ben Feder, the entrepreneur behind Take Two Interactive and the now President of International Partnership for Chinese internet titan firm, Tencent did.Risking his job, Ben and his wife Victoria and four young children, dropped everything and moved to Bali for the better part of a year. Through this journey, he learned how to find more than balance but how to live again. He tells his story of rediscovery and reconnection in his new book TAKE OFF YOUR SHOES: From the Boardroom to Bali and Back. Now not everyone can totally quit their job and uproot to Bali but as Feder explains, there are changes everyone can make to be more connected to family, friends, and happiness while still being successful. Ladders obtained an excerpt from TAKE OFF YOUR SHOES: From the Boardroom to Bali and Back:- - - I took time to let the fractured bone in my foot heal and considered carefully the opportunities that came my way. Instead of saying yes to many of them, I was highly selective. Like the meditative wisdom that every wandering thought is an invitation to reorient, center, and restart, I decided to begin again. At first, I mentored and coached CEOs as they built their companies for themselves and their investors. I relied on my expertise and experience to help young technology companies grow. Periodically, in introductory meetings, my sabbatical story came up. It didnât connect with everyone, but with those it did, I developed a quick and easy bond that was deeper than usual. It was like a secret handshake with men and women who were curious and sought meaning beyond success and winning at all costs. When Steve Christian, the entrepreneur from Java, asked me to invest in a venture of his in Indonesia, I jumped at the chance. What excited me was not just the nature of the opportunity or the off-the-beaten path angle but the ability to be in business with creative people I liked and admired. And I wanted to keep a business toehold in Asia.I followed Julia Cameronâs advice in her powerful book on creativity, The Artistâs Way: I devoted two hours a week to go on an âartist date,â time spent taking a solo expedition to explore something that interested me (I focused on the art galleries in Chelsea).I also wrote âmorning pages,â three pages of stream of consciousness designed to clear the mind and chase away the self-critical voice that was so disruptive to creative flow. After a few sessions, I realized I wanted to add structure and direction to the exercise and write a book. This book. If others learned something from it, good. Besides, trying something new and creative, without regard to success or failure, would be applying directly the lessons I had learned on sabbatical .As I engaged at work, my animal spirits stirred again. One day, I came across an opportunity with a large public company in the internet services sector that I thought was terribly managed. Investor sentiment was decidedly negative. Since its CEO had taken the helm eight years earlier, the stock price had collapsed over 80%. I dug in, analyzed the company, and developed a plan for change. I approached a board director whom I knew with a long-shot proposal.âHereâs the way I see it,â I said. âIf the company doesnât make a serious change now, the train will leave the station, and the enterprise will be unsalvageable. On the other hand, if the company acts now, I think the upside could be really exciting. I can turn this company around, create a vehicle for growth, and add a ton of value along the way.âI wasnât expecting a resounding reception. Boards of directors tend to be weary of outsiders with novel plans.âThat sounds like a breath of fresh air,â he said. âLet me run it by a few other directors and get back to you.âTwo weeks later, he called me back. âThe thing is, the sitting CEO still has the boardâs confidence.âI felt my indignation rise. If management wanted to run the company into the ground, then the current CEO was the man for the job.I wasnât about to give up. I called some hedge funds I knew and set up some meetings. We talked about possible courses of action. I was back in activist-shareholder land. Inevitably, proceeding would require waging an expensive fight, and any fight had the potential to turn nasty. This time, I paused. This may have been a situation where a nasty fight was required, but did it have to be me to enter the battle? Did I really want to be hostile if I didnât need to be? Perhaps I would re-engage later in that sort of activity, but with my Bali experience so fresh, I knew the answer. I called the funds I had been talking to and dropped the matter.Throughout that experience, I noticed that the ch aracter of my ambition and aggression had changed; it was no longer an overbearing imperative. My well-being did not depend on the next achievement. I realized that to compete, I needed to draw more on the wisdom of my experience than on the brute force of the mettle Iâd developed in earlier years. The ethos of intention, presence, and creativity was as important to me as the culture of material success and accomplishment. Now when I needed to be tough in a business situation or negotiation, an appropriate aggression came naturally, though the edge had softened. I felt that I had become a better leader, entrepreneur, and executive. It was as if I had rewired myself into a certain kind of professional grace. As I went about my days, I strove to strike a balance of surrendering to what the world had to offer while fighting to tear opportunities from it. I sought to integrate the parts of me that wanted to engage, be effective, and compete with those parts that sought meaning, gratitud e, and presence. I realized it was the intention to synthesize, not the synthesis itself that motivated me. Like the peaceful warrior, my attempt to simultaneously engage and surrender would be ceaseless. The practices Iâd cultivated in Bali, which by now had become routine, centered me.I meditated daily, sometimes for three minutes, other times thirty and longer. I made yoga practice a near-daily part of my routine. When I got the call or message that business executives inevitably receive, the one that could ruin their entire day, I rolled with it better. When unhelpful thoughts conspired to commandeer my mind, as they still did periodically, their currents didnât carry me off. Instead, I stayed on the banks and watched them float past. I created space and recognized they were only thoughts that I didnât need to believe. By regularly taking time to fall back from fierce engagement, I had opened myself to a strength I had not previously known.I found a studio in SoHo that, li ke Pranotoâs, attracted artists to life drawing sessions. When I could afford the time, I drew to clear my mind, now in charcoal instead of graphite. Charcoal had depth, mood, and character that were absent in graphite, and it didnât leave a sheen on the page the way graphite did.On Fatherâs Day, Victoriaâs gift to me was a few sessions with a painting teacher who introduced me to oils. Alex Shundi was part painter, part chef, and part philosopher. And a gifted teacher. In just the way drawing opened my eyes to line and edge, painting opened them to color. Color became vivid to me. I could see its complexity just walking down the street, my mind breaking down colors to their components, like factoring numbers. It was as if parts of my brain were lighting up for the first time.I still found my own drawing and painting difficult but enjoyed the challenge and deep concentration the work required.I recognized my inner critic and greeted it like a friend. When that inner voice pe eped, I noticed it and deliberately shifted my thought pattern. I took a beat and reminded myself that almost any complex creative work looks wretched in its early stages. With enough practice and the proper intention, I knew my eye would get keener in its observations of light and edge and my hand would become truer in its production of image.Still, meditation, yoga, and art were not a cure-all.One morning, I woke to a news story from Indonesia. Two of the Bali Nine had been sentenced to death and executed. Just when I was taking in the dawn of a new day, I felt as if a dagger had ripped through my heart. All the meditation practice in the world could not protect me from the anger and grief that I felt for men and families I had never met.One day, I received a call from a professional friend who was a cofounder of one of Chinaâs most successful and, I thought, exciting technology companies. He pitched me on joining the company. âIt doesnât get any bigger than this,â he said. And the role he had in mind was a hand-in-glove fit with my interests and skills. More important, the company had a collaborative culture that openly promoted a positive optimistic outlook and a long-term orientation. Demanding without being threatening, patient without being foolish, it became successful, I concluded, not out of pure ambition but from an interest in exploring new areas and a willingness to try new approaches even if failure was a realistic possibility. It was the corporate version of Dweckâs open mindset.I thought long about the trade-offs and adjustments that I would have to make- working in another culture and language, the time and attention away from family because of travel demands, working in multiple time zones, and the general pressures of a fast-growing enterprise. It seemed as if I could be headed back into the situation I had left.Still, the opportunity to learn and grow while working with some extraordinarily smart and capable people appealed to me.I equivocated about the decision, but in the end, it was Eric who convinced me to join. âEven Thoreau had to return to Boston.âI realized that my quest would end like so many others, with a return home and a new sense of mission. Like the animal that had shed its skin, I was reborn. I accepted the offer and dove in with wholehearted intention. I even undertook to learn Chinese, again challenging myself to learn a difficult, even daunting skill. Some of my earlier habits returned. I was traveling again, taking late phone calls, and missing dinners. But I realized that everyone needs to practice their trade. This is what I did. Yet I did it with a new perspective - more mindfully, as a meditation teacher would say- with less angst and stress, and always with an eye on where I was going. Not in conflict with my family but always looking to dovetail our endeavors and lives.

Is the Virtual Workforce Trend Harming Communication Skills
Is the Virtual Workforce Trend Harming Communication Skills Is the Virtual Workforce Trend Harming Communication Skills Studies predict that by 2020, more than 40 percent of our nationâs workforce- or 60 million people- will be freelancers, contractors and temporary workers. And as so many seek that work-life balance, why wouldnât this trend continue past the next seven years? Most people love the idea of working from home, being your own boss, making your own schedule and, probably the biggest benefit, not having to commute into an office. But the flexible lifestyle isnât always as charming as it seems. Like all things in life, working remotely has its downside: Inconsistent income (if youâre a freelancer) Out-of-office distractions Being alone/isolated on a daily basis Overworking Not working enough (goes back to distractions) Most people understand the pros and cons that come with telecommuting, but there is one area I havenât seen addressed as much- developing and strengthening communication skills. Think about it: When we are young weâre forced to develop communication skills (outside of the home) as we go to school and interact with others. We learn social etiquette and the doâs and donâtâs of interacting with other people. As we grow, we learn the same type of communication skills, only this time for a professional environment. What happens when you take that environment away or significantly decrease your presence in one? Weâve heard opinions on how this new wave of technological communication is slowly but surely taking the place of face-to-face communicationâ¦which isnât always a good thing. Can the same be true for this new trend of telecommuting? Like all good discussions, this issue has some pros and cons that need to be addressed. Shall we? Topic: Remote workers and communication Pro: Working remotely doesnât harm communication, because there are plenty of ways for these types of workers to stay connected. Youâre in the comfort of your home working on assignments for XYZ company. A problem arises. How can you stay connected with others on your team? Well, thanks to that good-old boom of technology, there are now more ways than ever to communicate with someone. Skype, Google chat, email, shared whiteboard, IM, group chat, video conferencing, social media, fax, conference calls, and the age-old phone call. The list of technological communications tools can go on and on. Telecommuters often participate in weekly conference calls to stay up to date on the company (or team) happenings. They can have Skype sessions with clients and/or their team members and bosses if they desire to âput a face with a nameâ and feel more like theyâre physically present. Communication isnât stifled because the remote workers can constantly interact with others on their team, just as if they were in the office. Con: Working remotely (physically outside of an office) hinders communication and negatively affects how connected one feels to a team and/or company. Letâs face it, working from home can be lonely. This is especially true if you live alone and/or donât have close relationships in your local community. A family friend recently expressed her concern in working from home: âI do not feel like Iâm growing,â she had explained. âIâm the only employee so I never really have to talk to anyone. Sure, I communicate with others on a daily basis, but most of it is through email. I am truly disconnected socially.â There is a reason our teachers made us work in groups while in school- to learn how to effectively work with others. Developing social skills and understanding how to communicate inter-personally is extremely crucial because life calls for interacting with others. Sure, technology has allowed us to communicate while physically being away from others, but there is something powerful (and necessary) in physical face-to-face communication. Expressing yourself via email is totally different when expressing yourself in someoneâs presence. Physical communication teaches us how and when to use certain tones; it can tell a lot about ourselves or others (passionate, excited, sad, etc.); and it helps us feel connected to the person weâre communicating with. Working remotely can cause a disconnection between the worker and his/her team because of the lack of physicality. For example, in this article the author explains his dislike of being âthe invisible guyâ at the table during conference calls and that working remotely adds to the familiar phrase âout of sight , out of mind.â Because your colleagues never see you they donât know who you are (and probably donât care). You donât feel like youâre truly a member of the team. What do all of you think, Recruiter.com readers? If you work remotely (or have) share your pros and cons on telecommuting and communication. Are our technological tools enough or does physically being away hinder communication?

Needle Drop Licenses and When You Need one
Needle Drop Licenses and When You Need one Needle Drop Licenses and When You Need one A needle drop license is a somewhat outdated term in music, but the general principle still applies even in a non-vinyl medium. Essentially, a needle drop license- also spelled needledrop- allows someone to use part of a piece of music just one time. Needle Drop Licenses in the Day of Vinyl Records The term is associated with the days of vinyl when the arm of a record player dropped the needle to the outer edge of the record as it spun on a turntable. In the context of music licensing, the term needle drop poetically refers to that moment when music is synchronized with another work such as a TV show, a video, or a commercial.? Each time the needle drops on a record, a new license is required. The use must secure a new needle drop license each and every time the song or even a part of the song is played. This is the case even if its the same song or song snippet used multiple times within the same project. Heres an example: If youre making a commercial and you want to use 10 seconds of Song X to start the commercial, and if you want to use the same 10 seconds of the song to play out the commercial, that would require two needle drop licenses. Think of it as renting just a snippet of a piece of music to be played in a commercial or other production rather than licensing the entire work. Needle Drop License vs. Synchronization License Licensing the entire work would require a synchronization license. A synchronization or sync license allows the license holder to sync music to a media output. Sync licenses are often used for TV shows and movies, but their scope is broader than that. Theyre necessary whenever any kind of visual is paired with the sound. When you hold a sync license, youre permitted to re-record that song for use in your project. If you want to use a specific version of the song by a specific artist, youll also have to get a master recording license. Typically, a sync license is obtained from a music publisher while a master recording license is obtained from the record label or the owner of the master. A sync license usually covers a specific period of time, and the license will stipulate in what manner the song can be used. Needle Drop Licenses vs. Sampling Needle drop segments are slightly different from sampling, which is the term that applies when youre reusing part of a song, such as a chorus, in a different way within another song. This practice is fairly common in rap and hip-hop music. Needle Drop License Cost The cost of a needle drop license varies depending on the work being sampled and the work in which it will be used. It can be negligible or quite expensive. The cost is set by the legal owner of the music.

what to put on a resume when you have zero work experience
what to put on a resume when you have zero work experience what to put on a resume when you have zero work experience A reader writes: I was tapped to help my friend, âJordan,â get their resume together. Jordan and I are both in our early-mid 20s and have been friends since we were in middle school. Jordan has always been very introverted and didnât really do extracurricular activities at school. They were okay as far as grades, but they didnât really do anything beyond that. Their scores on tests like the SATâs were extremely high and I know that Jordan can spend hours composing music, researching, or writing- they even built multiple website forums from mostly scratch for our mutual friends to participate in. When we went to college, Jordan struggled with their major, switching it a couple of times before moving to a community college (due to the costs) and eventually deciding they would take a break to try and get some work experience before going back to school. During this time, Jordan did not really make very many friends and had a hard time participating in campus activities due to stress. They donât have any work experience, volunteer experience, or really, anything that they can put on a resume! They are hard working and very, very smart, but schooling was always a challenge. I know that Jordan could be a good employee, and I think that channelling their skills into a workplace could help them gain some serious self-esteem that they are lacking. They can be very driven and focused, but they just donât have anything that could âproveâ it to a boss or hiring manager. They are looking at volunteering opportunities, but they are limited - while jobs are advertised everywhere. Jordan asked me to help write their resume and I am at a loss! What do you do if your resume is truly âemptyâ? Jordan is getting frustrated with the sense that âyou have to have experience to gain experienceâ and I canât help but agree. Do you have any advice for us? Help! (And no, neither Jordan nor I are comfortable or able to share the websites they built- theyâre all defunct and the ones that are still around are private for our friend group!) Yeah, if Jordan truly has no work experience of any kind, not even interning or volunteering, and no extracurriculars, their job search is going to be hard. The thing is, employers donât really hire for potential - youâve got to be able to show how youâve applied that potential in some way. Even with entry-level jobs, youre going to be up against other entry-level candidates who have some amount of experience summer jobs, internships, campus projects, etc. Did Jordan do anything during school other than attend class? Edit articles for professors? Organize an event? Make fundraising calls to alumni? Lead a class project? None of those are great substitutes for work experience, but theyâre better than nothing, and it might be that digging into those types of activities will yield some content for their resume. But if not and theres literally nothing Jordan could put on a resume, its likely that Jordan wont be competitive right now for the sorts of jobs that expect a resume. Instead, they need to focus on getting any work experience they can. Volunteering would be good. Temping would be better (and if they can pass the temp agencyâs skills tests, theyâll probably get sent on some temp jobs). They should also consider taking a low-level customer service job just to have something on their resume. And this is very much a time to lean hard on their network (and friends and family members networks if possible) to find someone who might be willing to pay them for something, even if its just a few weeks of filing. Also! Dont dismiss those website forums so quickly. Building something from scratch is impressive. I get that theyre either defunct or private, but if Jordan can create one thats sharable, that would allow them to list all of that work (and then if asked for samples, they can explain the situation and offer up the model one that is sharable).

What to Do in College to Get a Job After Graduation
What to Do in College to Get a Job After Graduation What to Do in College to Get a Job After Graduation More and more, a college degree is a prerequisite for employment. A recent survey from CareerBuilder found that many companies have increased the educational requirements for employees. In fact, 41 percent of employers look for college-educated workers for positions that formerly required only a high school degree. Employers in the survey said that a college-educated workforce leads to high work quality, productivity, communication, and innovation, among other benefits. But just having a degree does not mean that getting your first job out of college is automatic or easy. Here are seven things you can do during college to heighten your likelihood of getting a job quickly - plus, a look at entry-level job titles, and jobs by major. Here are seven practical things you can do to get a post-grad job: Get Out of the Classroom Attending college allows you to explore ideas and gain knowledge. Revel in this opportunity - take classes that go beyond the requirements of your major so you get a full, well-rounded education. (You never know: that unrelated class you take sophomore year could spark a passion that resets your career aspirations.) But classes are not the only place you can learn - they may be deeply informative, but theres no substitute for on-the-job experience. Nearly any job will help you gain hard and soft skills, broaden your network and help you discover what work you love (and which jobs youd prefer to avoid). When choosing a job, look for ways you can earn the top skills that employers seek in candidates, including strong communication abilities and problem-solving skills. As well, if you know what kind of job youd like to have after graduation, look for a role within that industry - whether its a volunteer position, internship, or part-time job. Hereâs information on how to find an internship. Find a Mentor This sounds very official. Dont get intimidated! A trusted friend, a parent, or a professor can all make excellent mentors. A mentor can help you think through what kind of job you want, weigh your options for a part-time job, help you negotiate an offer, read your cover letter, or practice interviews. If you already know what field you want to work in after graduation, its especially ideal to have a mentor within the industry. (Perhaps someone who you met during one of your industry-related part-time or summer break jobs fits the bill!) But even if you are still figuring out what kind of work you want to do, and which industries interest you most, its helpful to have a mentor to think through your options. Build Friendships and Relationships Between classes, shared meals, study groups, social and cultural events, and dorms (for students who live on campus), its hard not to make friends during college. In fact, these relationships are one of the big advantages of attending college: you are forming a broad network of people, and thanks to social media, youll likely stay in touch with them your whole lifetime. These people are friends, yes, but they may also introduce you to other helpful contacts, or help you find a job. Prioritize building these relationships, along with your education. Spend Time Networking And, of course, do more traditional networking throughout your college career. Start by creating a LinkedIn profile: Its OK if you do not have a lot of career information at first - thatll come. List your education, and connect with people you meet (such as visiting lecturers, students who are graduating before you, etc.). Here are three reasons why a LinkedIn profile is helpful and tips for what to include in your profile. As well, you can create a Twitter account and use it to share industry news and follow industry influencers. Semester break is an ideal time to ramp make connections, and ramp up your job search activities. As you get closer to graduation, go beyond the Internet in your networking efforts: Set up coffee dates or phone calls with friends who graduated a few years ago - ask them what theyâd do differently in their job search, and what their most effective strategies were. Attend informational sessions from companies, job fairs, and other in-person events. Follow these tips to get the most out of job fairs - and always remember to connect with people you met in person on LinkedIn and send a thank you note to any company representatives you spoke with. Get Your Resume Ready Itâs never too early to write and refine your resume. You can write one your first year of college, and then update it annually or at the end of each semester. Every honor you receive (such as getting on the Deanâs list) is worth including on your resume, as are all positions you hold, both paid and unpaid. Review these articles to help get started crafting your resume: Resume Tips for College StudentsCollege Graduate Resume Example Entry Resume Resume Examples and Tips Go on Informational Interviews It can be overwhelming to apply for jobs right out of college. Job titles may feel confusing, and many positions will say âentry levelâ but also demand a hefty amount of on-the-job experience. Informational interviews can be a great aide to help you figure out which jobs are reasonable for you to apply to - and which ones arenât. Thatâs important, because these are a near-endless amount of jobs posted online, and you want to target your efforts so you apply to only relevant, attainable roles. As well as giving you valuable information that will help you target your job search and be informed during job interviews, informational interviews are an opportunity to form connections with a company and its staffers. If you shine during an informational interview, you might be considered for a position later on. Check in With Your Career Office at School Consider this one of the perks of your college experience. Your career office can connect you with alumni to do informational interviews, help you practice interview skills, review your resume, connect you with career tests, and so much more. See more information on how your alumni network can assist you during your job search. Common First Jobs for College Graduates New college graduates typically start work in entry-level positions. For these entry-level roles, titles like âassociate,â âassistant,â or âcoordinatorâ are common. Interview Wear Dress to Impress For Less
Interview Wear Dress to Impress For Less Interview Wear Dress to Impress For Less Itâs almost the end of the school year. For college seniors that means itâs job-search time. As students order their caps and gowns, career fairs are sprouting up with the spring flowers while computers and apps on campuses are focused on job search. As a young professional I vividly remember the months leading up to graduation day. Those nights were packed with goodbyes with friends, last hurrahs at campus hangouts and the storied senior year fountain run tradition. Those days were filled with a different kind of activity; I hustled from appointments with career counselors to job fairs and resume writing workshops. I loved my alma mater, and in the days leading up to graduation I never felt that more poignantly. Not only was it the place that I developed and grew as a student, it also supported my next steps into the world. The USC Career Center did a fantastic job of connecting students with organizations that were actively recruiting, provided resume-writing help and even scheduled interviews. What the career center was not prepared to do, however, was give me fashion advice. âAlways dress well, but keep it simple!â â" Jared Tomas OK, quell your fears and swallow your panic. Put down the maxed out credit card, and step away from those plaid pants. When dressing for an interview, itâs important to remember that the interviewer is not looking at the label on your pants to determine the designer (unless youâre going into fashion) or contemplating the elaborate knot in your tie. The best interview fashion is fashion that the interviewer doesnât even notice because theyâre focused on what youâre saying and not what youâre wearing. Easy basics include⦠For Men For Women A black, navy, or grey suit Black pencil skirt A blue or white shirt A black, navy or grey suit A simple tie A simple blouse Black leather shoes 2-inch black pumps I recommend looking at Targetâs âWear to Workâ line of clothes, which features designers such Isaac Mizrahi. Or take a look at J.C. Penneyâs âWork Clothes,â which has over 2,000 products. âWhen accessorizing, always take off the last thing you put on.â â" Coco Chanel Now that youâve got the basics, donât ruin your look by over accessorizing. An interview is not the time for your fabulous clinking charm bracelet, six-inch sparkling heels or that SpongeBob tie your younger brother gave you. Ladies: Choose simple and discreet jewelry that accentuates your outfit without distracting. Try sites like Stella Dot or Jewelmint.com to find inexpensive designs. Gentleman: Stick to a simple tie with soothing colors and a classic cufflink style. So how are you going to afford it all? Follow these 5 tips for budgeting while you shop for interview clothes: 1. Become your own barista Those all-nighters you pulled in college cramming for exams and writing term papers made you dependent on a steady caffeine drip of Starbucks, Peetâs, Coffee Bean or Dunkinâ Donuts. Itâs time to put away your Gold Card and delete the Starbucks app from your iPhone. Did you pay attention to the fact that your Venti Mocha Caramel Sugary coffee concoction costs you upwards of $5 (and be honest, some of you are going three times a day)? Skip the store and start brewing at home. Starbucks even makes fantastic instant coffees that you can stock up on. By cutting out one coffee house coffee per day, you can save $150 in one month, which will buy a nice pair of slacks or a pencil skirt from J.Crew or Banana Republic. 2. Pack your favorite eats and treats Gone are the days of meal plans and discretionary funds loaded onto a student ID card. Itâs time to accept that you canât eat out every single day. Spending $10-$15 on lunch is draining your bank account and holding you back from attaining a true âinterview chicâ look. Try packing your lunch during the week from leftovers the night before and hit the town on the weekends. By sticking to leftovers and brown bag lunches just twice a week, you can save $80 in a single month, enough to purchase the perfect interview black leather shoes. 3. Make your list and check it twice Santa Claus is right. Itâs important to make lists. When attempting to save money, the key to staying within your budget is to sit down and carefully determine what you need and even more importantly, what you need now. Then when you get to the grocery store, pharmacy or the mall you are focused and on task. Only you know how much youâre overspending at the grocery store, but when I put this into practice, I saved an excess of $40 per grocery trip (plenty for a new interview-friendly accessory like a necklace or tie). 4. Take the bus Gas is expensive. If youâre lucky enough to live in a metropolitan area that has public transportation, you should use it. From New York Cityâs subway to BART in Northern California, sometimes itâs best to just put down the car keys and buy a bus pass. Depending on how much youâre driving and the size of your car, gas can cost $50 every time you fill up. If you can cut down your trips to the gas station to every 2 weeks, it could save you up to $100 (a trip to the hair salon before your next big interview). 5. Treasure hunt in a thrift store Now the fun starts. Did you know that you can buy fantastic interview-worthy designer clothing for very little money? Itâs time to channel your inner pirate and go on a treasure hunt through Goodwill, local charity stores such as the American Cancer Society Discovery Shops and The Junior League. Within those walls you will find lightly worn clothing with price tags that will make your bank account shout with joy and your mother smile proudly. The last time I went to one of these thrift shops, I was able to score a beautiful interview-appropriate dress originally priced at $150 for only $40. This is an exciting time to be a graduating senior in college, and there are a lot of big and difficult decisions that need to be made. Donât let decisions such as what you wear to your interview or how to pay for your interview clothes keep you up at night. Comment below and tell us about your best interview-worthy âfrugal fashion find!â
